Karel Franta

Karel Franta (born May 1, 1928 in Libčice nad Vltavou , † July 19, 2017 in Prague ) was a Czech painter and illustrator .

Life

Franta was born in Libčice nad Vltavou in 1928 and studied graphic design in Prague . He worked with important children's picture painters such as Jiří Trnka and Helena Zmatlíková . He completed his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague with Miloslav Holý and Vladimír Sychra . After graduating, he worked as a graphic designer for children's magazines and illustrated a large number of children's books, including Der Löwe Leopold by Reiner Kunze and the collection of German sagas from Bohemia and Moravia . Franta was very interested in music - many of his pictures contain musical motifs.

He was awarded the United Nations UNICEF Grand Prix for his work . He was also a member of the International Children's Book Association . Franta organized numerous solo and group exhibitions. His motto was: “I couldn't depict evil, and that doesn't belong in children's literature either.” He died after a long illness of a heart attack in the circle of his family.
