Karen Clark Stanton (* 1955 ) is an American diplomat. She is from Michigan .

Career

Stanton received a bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan and a Master of Social Science from National War College in 2000 . Here she wrote the article "Controlling Weapons of Mere Destruction" .

She began her career in the foreign service from 1987 to 1990 as a consular officer at the US embassy in Beijing and from 1991 to 1993 at the embassy in Islamabad . From 1993 to 1995 she was in the visa office of the Bureau of Consular Affairs at the State Department in Washington, DC In 1995, Stanton returned to Beijing as a Personnel Officer in the embassy and stayed until 1998 when she took a professional break for her Masters. In 2001 she became an officer in the Bureau of Human Resources Assignments. That same year, Stanton became a Supervisory Post Management Officer in the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs . From 2004 to 2008 she then worked at the Embassy in Singapore as Management Counselor . In 2008, Stanton returned to the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs as assistant executive director , where she was promoted to executive director in 2009.

Stanton was named Judith Fergin's successor as the new United States Ambassador to East Timor on July 31, 2013 . However, Stanton had to wait a total of 401 days for confirmation by the Senate in 2014 . The Senate Foreign Relations Committee confirmed the appointment on October 31 , but, like many others, confirmation in the Senate was delayed by Republican kidnappings . They wanted to force the questioning of other witnesses to the attack on the US consulate in Benghazi on September 11, 2012. The accreditation with East Timor's President Taur Matan Ruak took place on January 16, 2015. Stanton remained ambassador in Dili until December 22, 2017. Kathleen Fitzpatrick was her successor .

Stanton is married to William Stanton, an official of the Foreign Service in retirement, the 2009-2012 director of the office of the American Institute in Taipei was. They have two daughters together.
