The Karhulan-Sunilan Rautatie Oy (KSR) was Finland's first private railway company . They built the Kymi – Sunila (–Halla) railway line ( Karhulan Rautatie in Finnish ).
The company's share capital is held by Sunila Oy . The wholly owned Stora Enso company produces pulp in the Kotka region .
history
On the island of Halla, a sawmill was built for Hallan Osakeyhtiö in 1876 in Russian times by the Norwegian company N. Otterstad & Co. This passed into Finnish ownership in 1916. A pulp mill was built later. The sawmill was closed in 1986. UPM-Kymmene owns the pulp mill and has plans to build a private port and reopen the disused route to the island.
Kymi – Sunila railway line
The Kymi – Sunila ( Finnish Karhulan Rautatie ) railway was originally built by Karhula Oy (KSR) for freight traffic in order to connect the company's factories in Karhula and Kymi with each other and with the Finnish railway network. The company's own rail network extends from Kymi station in Karhula over parts of Sunila. The route ended on Halla Island, where a sawmill and pulp mill were operated. At Kymi station there is a connection to VR-Yhtymä , the Finnish state railway company.
The line was completed in 1897, but was not officially opened until May 3, 1900. Originally, the line was built as a narrow-gauge railway with a gauge of 785 mm. The length of the route was 7.33 km at the beginning of 1915. Karhula Oy was taken over by A. Ahlström Oy in 1915.
The conversion into a broad-gauge railway with a gauge of 1524 mm took place in 1926. The line to the island of Halla was served until 1965. Until then, it was the only connection to the island. After the construction of a new road bridge next to the railway bridge, it was closed due to insufficient security.
vehicles
With the locomotives, one-offs, mostly used, were always used.
