Karl-Heinz Mehlan
Karl-Heinz Mehlan (born July 18, 1916 in Krimnitz , † October 9, 2003 in Rostock ) was a German social hygienist .
Mehlan received his doctorate in medicine in 1944 , worked at the Humboldt University in Berlin from 1951 and, after moving to the University of Rostock , built up the Institute for Social Hygiene from 1955, of which he was appointed director the following year. At the three-day conference International Abortion Situation, Abortion Control, Anticonception, held in Rostock-Warnemünde in May 1960 , in which well-known scientists in this specialty from 19 countries took part, he pleaded for the legalization of abortion . Accordingly, the law on the interruption of pregnancy was passed in the GDR on March 9, 1972 .
Mehlan also initiated the nationwide establishment of marriage and family counseling facilities, the construction of the country's first condom factory and, last but not least, the introduction of the wish-for-child pill , which was called the GDR parlance, in 1965.
Mehlan was honored with the honorary title of Honored Physician of the People in 1961 , and in 1964 he received the Patriotic Order of Merit . In 1986 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Rostock.
