Hünermann went to high school in Cologne and Opladen with the Abitur in 1950. He initially studied medicine and especially anatomy in Freiburg and from 1953 geology and paleontology in Cologne, Mainz and Tübingen and received his doctorate in 1962 under Otto Schindewolf in Tübingen (Die Suidae ( Artiodactyla , Mammalia ) from the Dinotheriensanden (Unterpliocene = Pont) Rheinhessen (SW Germany)). From 1957 to 1960 he was a volunteer assistant in the Hessian State Museum in Darmstadt with Heinz Tobien and then assistant with a grant from the German Research Foundation . In 1968 he became senior assistant and in 1971 curator and lecturer at the University of Zurich. After retiring in 1993, he moved with his family to Mellingen AG .

Hünermann's focus was on fossil mammals, especially proboscis , odd-toed ungulates (especially rhinos) and cetartiodactyla (especially pigs ) from the European Tertiary and Quaternary periods . But he also dealt with many other mammals and connections to archeology and archeozoology . He gave many public lectures about his research, expanded the collection in Zurich with mammalian finds from the tertiary molasse layers and worked with the founder of the Zurich Kulturama Paul Muggler.

1973 to 1976 he was President of the Swiss Paleontological Society.

He married Renate Schäfer from Elsheim in 1964 and had a daughter (born in 1967) and a son (born in 1971) with her.
