Karl Anders Ekman

Karl Anders Ekman (born March 30, 1833 in Vyborg , † February 1, 1855 in Düsseldorf ) was a Finnish painter.

Life

Ekman was the son of Fredrik Joakim Ekman (1798–1872), a chaplain of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland, and his wife Sofia Agata, née Ingman († 1876). The painter Robert Wilhelm Ekman was his uncle. Ekman studied at the Stockholm Art Academy from 1844 to 1846 , from 1849 to 1852 at the drawing school of the Finnish Art Association in Åbo (Turku) and in 1853/54 at the Copenhagen Art Academy . In 1854/55 he was enrolled in Theodor Hildebrandt's painting class at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . There was contact with the Norwegian painter Adolph Tidemand , who lived in Düsseldorf . In 1855 he was represented for the first time in an art exhibition. He fell ill with pulmonary tuberculosis and died at the age of 21 in Düsseldorf.

Ekman's works can be found in the Ateneum and the Cygnaeuksen Gallery in Helsinki as well as the Tampere Art Museum . The Ateneum Helsinki catalog, 1988, lists 31 works (watercolors, oil sketches) with illustrations.
