Karl Arnold von Hompesch (born April 28, 1736 ; † February 3, 1803 in Münster ) was canon of various cathedral monasteries , provost and mining entrepreneur.

family

He came from the noble family von Hompesch and was the son of Johann Wilhelm von Hompesch zu Bollheim and his wife Isabella Francisca nee. from Bylandt to Rheydt . Ferdinand von Hompesch zu Bolheim (1744–1804), Grand Master of the Order of Malta , and the Bavarian Finance Minister Franz Karl Joseph Anton von Hompesch zu Bolheim (1735–1800) were his brothers.

The nephew Johann Wilhelm von Hompesch zu Bolheim (1761-1809) was also Bavarian Minister of Finance. The niece Auguste Elisabeth von Hompesch (1763–1785) married Count Carl-Wilhelm Franz-Xaver von Spee (1758–1810). Both are the great-grandparents of Admiral Count Maximilian von Spee , who became famous in recent German history , who died in 1914 with his two sons in a naval battle near the Falkland Islands .

Church offices

In 1762 Hompesch received positions as cathedral canon in Münster and Liège . In 1772 another canon post followed in Eichstätt . He was elected provost of Saint-Feuillien in Fosses-la-Ville in 1774 . In connection with the First Coalition War , he had to flee in 1792 and from then on lived in Münster. In 1799 he was appointed sealer of the diocese of Münster . For this he received a salary of around 396 Reichstalers.

Mining industry

He was the founder of the Linneper Hütte (today part of Sundern in the Sauerland ). In the year 1784 he had already had speculations carried out on Eisenstein am Ramberg opposite the hut. The Bergamt Olpe enfeoffed him with the hut in 1787. There is evidence that miners from the mine lived in Linneper Hütte in 1796. In addition, he had mutulations carried out at Hellefeld , Endorf and Seidfeld . He also entered into contracts with miners from Hagen . This served to secure the raw material base of the hut. In 1780 at the latest, he sold the largest share of the mining property, in particular to the von Lüninck family .
