Karl August Hermann (born September 11 . Jul / 23. September  1851 greg. In the village Võhma at Põltsamaa , † December 29, 1908 jul. / 11. January  1909 greg. In Tartu ) was an Estonian linguist , journalist and composer .

education

Karl August Hermann was born the son of a blacksmith . He attended elementary school in Põltsamaa. He later went to Saint Petersburg , where he passed his Abitur as an external student. He was initially an assistant teacher in the parish of Põltsamaa, later from 1871 to 1873 teacher in Saint Petersburg.

From 1874 to 1878 Karl August Hermann studied theology at the University of Tartu , then from 1878 to 1880 Comparative Linguistics at the University of Leipzig . There he also received his doctorate for Dr. phil.

National awakening

He then moved to Tartu. From 1882 he worked as an editor for the Estonian newspaper Eesti Postimees . He was also active in numerous Estonian associations and committees. The Estonian Scholarly Society in particular offered him an important forum.

Karl August Hermann supported the national awakening of the Estonians and spoke out in favor of a stronger self-confidence of the Estonian people. In 1886 he bought the newspaper Perno Postimees , which he published in Tartu and later renamed Postimees . From 1889 he was also employed as a lecturer for the Estonian language at the University of Tartu . In 1896, Karl August Hermann, already marked by illness, sold his shares in Postimees, where a younger generation, also Estonian-national, continued his tradition.

Karl August Hermann was a versatile and educated contemporary who had a great influence on his time. He dealt with music , history , linguistics , journalism and many other fields. He is the author of the first Estonian opera , Uku ja Vanemuine ( German : Uku and Vanemuine ), which premiered in 1908 . In it he deals with the subject of an alleged descent of the Estonians from the Sumerians . In addition, he published numerous Estonian songs and, from 1885 to 1887, the monthly Estonian music magazine Laulu ja mängu leht . Karl August Hermann was also the director of several Estonian song festivals . He has composed numerous Estonian songs for choirs himself .

Estonian language

Karl August Hermann was actively involved as a lecturer in the standardization of the Estonian written language. Between 1884 and 1896 he published the first complete Estonian grammar. He was also active as a creator of new Estonian words. The Estonian literary history ( Eesti kirjanduse ajalugu ) published by Hermann in 1898 is of great scientific value . His first Estonian encyclopedia , on which he worked from 1900 until his death, remained unfinished .
