Karl Bayer (classical philologist)
Karl Bayer (born July 28, 1920 in Reichertshofen ; † June 1, 2009 in Munich ) was a German classical philologist and high school teacher.
Life
After military service, Bayer studied classical philology, history and German at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich , where he passed the first state examination in 1949 and received his doctorate in 1952 . His dissertation, supervised by Friedrich Klingner , in which he reconstructed the Virgil -Vita Suetons , appeared in a larger edition fifty years later. After completing his studies, Bayer taught in grammar schools in Munich and Freising until he was appointed headmaster of the Wittelsbach grammar school in Munich in 1971 . From 1972 until his retirement in 1985 he was a ministerial advisor in the Bavarian State Ministry for Education and Culture. In this position, he campaigned for the modernization and didactics of ancient language teaching.
In addition to his teaching and reform activities, Bayer stood out in particular through translations and text editions of various Latin and Greek authors, including Cicero and Plato . In June 2009 (posthumously) he received the Academy Prize of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences for his life's work .
