Karl Bernhard (Baden-Baden)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Margrave Karl Bernhard von Baden (born January 14, 1657 in Baden-Baden , † July 6, 1678 in Rheinfelden ) was a non-ruling margrave of Baden-Baden and lieutenant colonel in the imperial army .

Life

Karl Bernhard was the youngest son of Margrave Wilhelm von Baden-Baden and his second wife Maria Magdalena von Oettingen-Baldern . The later Margrave Ludwig Wilhelm of Baden-Baden (known as Türkenlouis ) was a nephew of Karl Bernhard.

He served as a lieutenant colonel in the regiment of Colonel Count Alphons Portia , who defended Freiburg during the siege in November 1677 and withdrew to Rheinfelden after the surrender. As the deputy regimental commander, he was partly to blame for the attacks by the Croatian regiment on the civilian population of Freiburg and for the inglorious surrender.

Karl Bernhard died in Rheinfelden during the attack of the French troops on July 6, 1678 on the burning Rhine bridge. According to another account, he fell with his horse from the bridge into the Rhine during the fierce battle. His body was never found.
