Peter Anton Schleyer (often just Peter Schleyer ; born March 17, 1810 in Großeicholzheim , † February 25, 1862 in Ettenheim ) was a German Roman Catholic theologian and university professor .

Life

Schleyer was the son of a teacher. He spent his childhood in Waldhausen near Buchen . After he was first taught by various pastors in his home country, he was last taught by the dean and church councilor Wilckens in Großeicholzheim. He finally referred him to his brother in Mannheim, who was working there as a high administrative officer. From 1826 onwards, Schleyer was able to attend higher classes at the Mannheim Lyceum and completed his schooling there in 1828. In the same year he went to the University of Freiburg im Breisgau , where, among other studies, he mainly devoted himself to theology. With the support of the Freiburg University and the government, he was able to study outside of Freiburg. He was initially at the University of Bonn from 1832 , where he devoted himself particularly to language studies. In 1833 he moved to the University of Tübingen , from there to a short stay at the University of Munich . In 1835 he returned to Freiburg and entered the seminary .

Schleyer was ordained a priest on August 27, 1836, and on October 31 of the same year he was appointed associate professor of exegesis at the University of Freiburg. In the summer of 1837 he finally received the theological doctorate from the theological faculty . On May 14, 1839 he became a full professor of exegesis and the biblical-oriental languages. In 1843 he was dean of the faculty, and in 1845 he finally switched to the professorship for church history.

Schleyer was obviously endowed with a difficult personality. In 1852, following a complaint from the university's senate because of his allegedly incompatible behavior, he was asked to apply for his own parish within three months . He did not comply with this request. Thereupon he was transferred to the Lyceum in Rastatt in March 1853 while retaining his rank as a full professor and the corresponding salary . After he resisted the transfer, also through the press, he was finally dismissed from civil service on March 23, 1854 .

Schleyer was immediately entrusted with the parish of Kappel am Rhein by the Freiburg Archbishop Hermann von Vicari . Due to abuse the government he received the sentence to at this time in prison , but this was withdrawn in November. 1854 However, this condemnation had nothing to do with the church dispute described above. Due to his poor health, he moved to Ettenheim before his death.
