Karl Blodig

Karl Blodig (born October 16, 1859 in Vienna , † September 7, 1956 in Bregenz ) was an Austrian mountaineer , ophthalmologist and publicist .

Life

Karl Blodig was the son of Karl Blodig senior. (1820–1891), a renowned full university professor for ophthalmology in Graz , and his wife Marie.

From 1885, the year in which he began to ordain ophthalmologists and general medicine in Bregenz, until 1925, Blodig was one of the outstanding mountain climbers. He was in 1911 the first all four-thousand who after his own, then undisputed count of the summit Alps had mounted, some of them as the first . He reports about this in his book The Four Thousand Mountains of the Alps . The work, first published in 1923, is one of the classics of alpine literature. In 1928 he made two first ascents (at the age of 69).

On his tours he was sometimes accompanied by his mountain companion , the English landscape painter E. T. Compton .

Blodig came to Vorarlberg in 1885 and worked as an ophthalmologist in Bregenz for decades.
