Karl "Kuddl" Finke (born April 20, 1866 in Aschersleben , † December 15, 1935 in Hamburg-Altona ; nickname : Kuddl ) was a German tattoo artist , wrestler and showman.

Life

Karl Finke was born in Aschersleben in 1865. As far as is known, Finke ran a showman's business with his wrestling booth from 1907 to 1913 with his wife, the “artistically tattooed lady” Marie Finke. From 1914 his name can be found in the Altona address book under the address Große Marienstraße 8; Operation of a "tattoo institute". In 1929 Finke married again and he is said to have tattooed his second wife all over his body.

research

In his scientific study, first published in 1933 , Adolf Spamer explains Finke's drawing skills : The tattoo in the German port cities :

"... an awkward, but at the same time very folksy draftsman, the templates are rather simple, his drawings show a less artistic handwriting than Christian Warlich's ."

- Adolf Spamer

The Hamburg art historian Ole Wittmann has been leading an ongoing research project on the subject of "The legacy of the Hamburg tattoo artist Christian Warlich (1891–1964)", which is supported by the Hamburg Foundation for the Promotion of Science and Culture in cooperation with the Hamburg Historical Museums / Museum for Hamburg History began on December 1, 2015. During the research, Wittmann discovered the master album No. 3 by Karl Finke at the Institute for Saxon History and Folklore in Dresden, of the existence of which was previously unknown to the public. In 2017, Wittmann initiated the printing of the historical master album by the Hamburg tattoo artist Karl Finke (1865–1935), the »Book No. 3 «.

This first publication published by the research project Nachlass Warlich was submitted to the Art Directors Club in the design / book category and was awarded a “bronze nail”. In addition, the book, which was implemented in cooperation with the Leipzig University of Graphics and Book Art , was nominated for participation in the German Design Award 2019. After the first project publication, Book No. 3 for the tattoo artist Karl Finke (1866–1935) was also awarded the Birkner Prize and the Book Prize of the Hamburg State Library (longlist), the publication won the German Design Award 2019 in November 2018.

“The book about the once most famous tattoo artist in St. Pauli is formally impressive due to the great choice of paper and the clear design. The publication is also convincing in terms of content, which gives the viewer a good impression of the art of tattooing in the first half of the 20th century thanks to the original motifs shown. "

Trivia

“Karl Finke runs a tattoo institute at Grosse Marienstrasse 8. Tattooing is a dying industry. That's why Karl Finke does not live in a magnificent building, but in a rather gloomy and low store. "

- Erich Lüth in Neues Hamburg: Evidence of the reconstruction of the Hanseatic city, 1949

The name “Fincke” is given in official documents. Finke himself used both spellings, and he also spelled some of his first name “Karl” or “Carl”.
