Karl Franke (typographer)

Karl Franke (born January 28, 1894 in Silberberg , † October 18, 1952 in Stuttgart ) was a German typographer .

Life

Franke attended elementary school in Storkow (Mark) and Berlin . He completed an apprenticeship as a typesetter in a small business in Berlin . After that, he traveled around the country with a circus for some time to show athletic demonstrations, including juggling with cannonballs. Then Franke took part in the courses at the arts and crafts school in Berlin . There he then taught drawing for ten years . Franke became an active member of the Educational Association of German Book Printers, in whose competitions he was able to win over twenty first prizes. At the same time he worked as a consultant for graphic design. In 1932 he taught typographic and graphic design to students of letterpress printing in Berlin, Dresden and Leipzig . From 1938 he worked as a consultant in Stuttgart.

After the Second World War , Franke took over the typographic design of the magazine Die Welt der Frau in 1947 , which was published by the Deutsche Verlags-Anstalt until 1950 . Annemarie Weber was one of the editors at the beginning . From 1948 until his death he designed book editions for the Gutenberg Book Guild . Franke provided all of the furnishings for the works of the author Jack London .

Since 1949 Franke published - together with Heinrich Rinne - the series Free Typography in the magazine Das Buchgewerbe. In 1950 he was a founding member of the German Typokreis association in Frankfurt am Main .
