Karl Frieberth

Franz Karl Frieberth , also Karl Friberth , (born June 7, 1736 in Wullersdorf , Lower Austria , † August 6, 1816 in Vienna ) was an Austrian singer ( tenor ), librettist and composer.

Life

Frieberth came from a musical family. His oldest brother Johann Joseph became Kapellmeister at the Passau Bishop's Court, his other brother Thomas became a religious and composed sacred vocal works. From 1759 to 1776 he was a member of the Esterházy Prince Orchestra . Joseph Haydn wrote numerous pieces for him. Frieberth wrote the libretto for the opera L'incontro improvviso (1775) by Haydn. From 1771 he was a member of the Wiener Tonkünstlersozietät , a musical society in Vienna and conductor of a Viennese orchestra in 1776. As a composer Frieberth wrote masses, motets, litanies, sacred arias and hymns.
