Life

Karl Friedrich Hagenmüller attended the Oberrealschule in Hof, where he passed his Abitur in 1936. He was then obliged to do labor service before he was able to study business administration and mechanical engineering in Munich in 1938. There he became a member of the Corps Franconia Munich in 1938 . With the beginning of the Second World War he was drafted into the 1st Mountain Division . He was deployed in France, Yugoslavia, Russia, Hungary and Greece, received several awards (infantry assault badge, melee clasp, Iron Cross I) and promoted to captain. From May 1945 he was imprisoned in Austria for a few months. From April 1946 he was able to continue studying business administration. In 1947 he obtained his degree in business administration , in the following year he received his doctorate with the thesis The annual report of the stock corporation for Dr. rer. pole. and was able to do his habilitation in 1950 with the thesis on business maintenance.

In the same year he began to teach at the University of Munich , but the next year he switched to the University of Frankfurt am Main , where he was able to hold an extraordinary professorship from 1952 and was given a chair in banking management in 1953. At the university he headed the Institute for Cooperative Studies and Crafts Economics. In 1957, together with Reinhold Sellien , he founded the Bank Academy in Frankfurt, which was supposed to offer scientifically qualified advanced training for bank employees. Hagenmüller remained scientific director of the academy for many years.

In 1966 he switched to the private sector at Dresdner Bank and was appointed to its board the following year. In addition, he continued to teach banking management as an honorary professor at the University of Frankfurt. In 1964 his work Bankbetriebslehre appeared in three volumes, which after 15 editions so far can be described as a standard work. In the course of time he published numerous other textbooks that are also used for vocational training.

Honors

In 2000, Hagenmüller set up a foundation under his name to support the Frankfurt School of Finance and its students. From this foundation, the university has been awarding an award associated with his name every year since 2006 to the best graduates of a final year. In his honor and in gratitude for his support, the University's Executive Committee named the Karl Friedrich Hagenmüller Professorship for Financial Risk Management after him in March 2009, which is held by Ursula Walther in the first year .
