Karl H. Brohan

Karl H. Bröhan (born July 6, 1921 in Hamburg ; † January 2, 2000 in Berlin ) was an entrepreneur and important Berlin art collector .

The collection

In addition to pictures, Bröhan also collected porcelain and metalwork in the styles Art Nouveau , Art Deco and Functionalism .

The collection includes works by Émile Gallé and Joh. Loetz Witwe , furniture by Eugène Gaillard , Hector Guimard , Louis Majorelle , Peter Behrens , Rebecca Hinzmann, Bruno Paul and Richard Riemerschmid , furniture ensembles by Jacques-Émile Ruhlmann , Art Deco art such as the ironwork by Edgar Brandt, silver from Jean Puiforcat and Georg Jensen . Bröhan paid great attention to the Belgian Art Nouveau artist Henry van de Velde and the Viennese Secession artist Josef Hoffmann .

The continuously growing collection was first accessible to the public in 1973 in a villa in Berlin-Dahlem . Eight years later, on the occasion of his 60th birthday, the ambitious collector gave away most of his collections to the State of Berlin, which has been exhibiting them since October 14, 1983 opposite Charlottenburg Palace in a late classicist former barracks building, today's Bröhan Museum .

Karl H. Bröhan found his final resting place in Potsdam on the Bornstedter Friedhof .
