Karl Hassenpflug
Karl Hassenpflug (born January 5, 1824 in Kassel ; † February 18, 1890 there ) was a German sculptor .
His parents were the Hessian minister Ludwig Hassenpflug and his wife Charlotte Grimm , the only sister of Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm . Karl Hassenpflug was married to Christine Wolff von Todenwarth (1837-1894) since 1870.
Karl Hassenpflug came to Berlin in the studio of Ludwig Wilhelm Wichmann and was a student of Ludwig Schaller in Munich from 1844 to 1847 . From 1848 to 1850 he was in Rome and modeled the group Simson and Delilah there . He shared an apartment in Rome with the painter Karl Christian Andreae .
After returning to Germany, he worked for the new theater in Hanover , made a trip to England and then stayed in Kassel, where he carried out several sculptural works for the Elisabeth Church in Marburg and the Michael Church in Fulda.
In 1856 he went to Rome for the second time and there created his most beautiful works of great loveliness of forms from the circle of myths, namely the marble group Amor and Psyche (for King Friedrich Wilhelm IV. ), Eros and Anteros (Museum in Cologne), Ariadne , Galatea surrounded by cupids.
In 1868 he became professor of sculpture at the Kassel Academy and created several medallions of Hessian princes for the orangery building in Kassel and the groups of gable fields as well as genre groups and reliefs for the gallery building .
