Karl Heinrich Knappstein
Karl Heinrich Knappstein (born April 15, 1906 in Bochum ; † May 6, 1989 in Bad Homburg vor der Höhe ) was a German journalist and diplomat.
Life
Knappstein studied law , economics and sociology at the Universities of Cologne, Bonn, Berlin, Geneva and Cincinnati (Ohio). In the time of National Socialism he was editor of the Frankfurt Societätsdruckerei from 1937 to 1943 .
From 1945 to 1948 he worked as a ministerial director in the Hessian Ministry for Political Liberation. Here he was in particular entrusted with questions of denazification . From 1948 to 1950 he was press officer of the Board of Directors of the United Economic Area . From 1950 to 1951 he worked at the German Consulate General in New York and was appointed Consul General in Chicago in 1951. In 1956 he became Ambassador to Madrid ( Spain ), from 1958 to 1960 he was Deputy State Secretary in the Foreign Office , from 1960 to 1962 he was an observer for the Federal Republic of Germany at the United Nations . From 1962 he was the German ambassador in Washington D. C. ( USA ), whose office he held until 1969.
