Karl Heinrich Schier (born February 23, 1802 in Wilsdruff ; † March 11, 1869 in Dresden ) was a private scholar and Arabist in Dresden. Little is known of his life. He earned his living from private lessons with Dresden citizens and wealthy Englishmen. He did not succeed in finding a job at a library or public institute in Dresden. He was probably married and apparently had a child, because the gravestone reads: "Here lies my beloved father Carl Heinrich Schier in peace."

For many years he worked with the Leipzig orientalist Ludolf Krehl . His particular merit lies in the translation of the Arabic inscriptions on exhibits in the picture gallery , in the Green Vault and in the former Museum of Antiquities in Dresden. The Arabists admired his very beautiful Arabic script as well as his diligence and knowledge, but also criticized the fact that he lacked the scientific methodology and that he was just an experienced dilettante. He died in Dresden, his grave is in the Old Annenfriedhof in Dresden. The grave cross is provided with Arabic lettering.

The Arabic text Wa-innamā yuwaffā uğūrahā yauma l-qiyāma in translation reads And verily he will be fully reimbursed for his wages on the day of the resurrection, based on sura 3, verse 185 in the Koran : “Everyone will suffer death. Your wages will be fully refunded to you on the day of resurrection. Whoever is moved away from fire and led into paradise has reached the goal. This worldly life is only a beguiling usufruct. ”(Translation: Khoury). But if the saying refers to the wife Emilie Ernestine Schier, the translation could also be And truly, her wages will be fully reimbursed on the day of the resurrection , see Portal_Diskussion: Arabische_Welt # Karl_Heinrich_Schier . The saying would then also have a reference to the German inscription: "Here awaits the morning of the resurrection ..."
