Karl Hetz (Admiral)

Karl Hetz (born May 11, 1910 - December 23, 1980 ) was a German naval officer , most recently Vice Admiral of the German Navy and from 1966 to 1970 commander of the fleet .

Military career

Reichsmarine and Kriegsmarine

Hetz joined the Reichsmarine as an officer candidate in 1929 . After training as an officer at the Mürwik Naval School , he served on destroyers . From October 1938 to December 1939 he was a flag lieutenant in the fleet command and then first officer of the destroyer Z 5 Paul Jacobi . In November 1941 he became 2nd Admiral Staff Officer at the destroyer leader. Promoted to Corvette Captain on April 1, 1943 , he took over command of destroyer Z 34 on May 1, 1943 , which he held until the end of the war in May 1945.

post war period

After the end of the Second World War , Hetz was transferred to the German mine clearance service in August 1945 . Here he worked as a personnel officer until December 1947.

Federal Navy

On January 3, 1956, Hetz was hired as a frigate captain in the German Navy and served until 1960 as head of department (then called "Referent") in the Federal Ministry of Defense , where he was promoted to sea captain on May 1, 1958 . From October 1960 to March 1963 he was in command of the 3rd Destroyer Squadron and then until December 1962 Chief of Staff of the Central Naval Command in Bonn . On January 1, 1963, he was sub-department head in the Federal Ministry of Defense and in April of the same year under promotion to Flotilla Admiral Deputy Inspector of the Navy and Chief of Staff Command Staff of the Navy . In this post he was promoted to Rear Admiral on January 1, 1964 .

On October 1, 1966, Hetz was promoted to Vice Admiral and appointed commander of the fleet. From this post he retired on September 30, 1970.
