Vilarinho da Castanheira is a municipality ( freguesia ) in Portugal and belongs to the Carrazeda de Ansiães district . It has an area of 28.3 km² and 415 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011). This results in a population density of 14.7 inh / km².
Vilarinho da Castanheira was a district town from 1218 to 1853, the administrative territory of which included the municipalities of Carvalho de Egas , Castedo de Vilariça , Lousa , Mourão , Pinhal do Douro , Seixo de Manhoses , Vale de Torno and Vilarinho da Castanheira itself. At that time the village had significantly more inhabitants, in 1801 there were 3008, in 1849 the population grew to 3748.
Megalithic systems
The municipality is located in northeast Portugal , which is rich in evidence of megalithic cultures .
The Anta Pala da Moura by Vilarinho da Castanheira (also Anta de Vilarinho) is one of the most famous megalithic complexes north of the Duero . It is located at Cabeqa Boa (formerly Cabega de Mouro), just under 4 km east of the village. It is a large polygonal , almost round anta made of nine bearing stones. Of the originally long corridor, which opened to the east, only four side stones remain, and one of the bearing stones is also missing. Remains of red paint can be seen on the front stone. The Mamoa , the hill that once covered the complex, has been completely eroded.
The remains of the “ Dolmen da Concelheira” are a few dozen meters away . The lower parts of four bearing stones point to a formerly relatively large polygonal chamber made up of probably seven bearing stones.
About 20 m to the left of the path from Vilarinho to Cabeqa do Mouro, the "Mamoa das Lameiras", another megalithic complex that was destroyed at the end of the 19th century, was on a slight hill.
