Karl Hoheisel

Karl Hoheisel (born April 16, 1937 in Langendorf , Neisse district ; † February 17, 2011 in Bonn ) was a German religious scholar .

career

Hoheisel was a student of the Bonn religious scholar Gustav Mensching . His research areas were the history of Judaism, early and modern Islam and all religions of classical antiquity, the religious history of modern Europe, in particular new religions and modern religious movements such as Freemasons, esotericism and occultism. He also dealt with religious psychology and religious geography.

After studying philosophy , Catholic theology and the biblical and oriental languages ​​as well as studying comparative religion and ethnology , Hoheisel received his doctorate in Bonn in 1971. From 1965 to 1974 he worked as a research assistant or assistant at the Catholic Anthropos Institute in Sankt Augustin near Bonn. In 1971 he moved to the Philosophical-Theological University SVD St. Augustin near Bonn as a lecturer for comparative religious studies . In 1974 he completed his habilitation in comparative religion in Bonn. The title of the habilitation thesis is Ancient Judaism in a Christian Perspective . Until 1980 he then worked as part of a DFG research program at the University of Bonn .

Between 1980 and 1995 he was an adjunct professor at the University of Bonn and from 1981 worked as a research assistant at the Franz Joseph Dölger Institute for the Study of Late Antiquity. There he was chiefly editor and author, co-editor of volumes 17–24, of the Real Lexicon for Antiquity and Christianity . In 1988 he was promoted to deputy director of the Franz Joseph Dölger Institute.

From 1995 to 2000 he was professor for comparative religious studies at the University of Bonn, most recently director of the Institute for Religious Studies. He then worked there as an emeritus until 2007.
