Karl von Valois ( Charles de Valois ) (* around 1297; † August 26, 1346 ) was a Count of Alençon and Le Perche from the House of Valois .

He was the second son of Count Charles I of Valois and Margaret of Sicily . His older brother was therefore King Philip VI. of France , the first king of the House of Valois. Karl himself was the founder of the side branch of Valois-Alençon .

Life

Charles received the counties of Alençon and Le Perche from the inheritance of his father, who died in 1325. He was one of the most important supporters of his brother in his accession to the throne in 1328 and fought with him in the Battle of Cassel . At the royal court he stood up for Count Robert von Artois in his feudal process. During the quarrels between King Philip VI. and King Edward III. of England for sovereign rights in the Guyenne , Charles occupied Saintes in 1330 , but this was returned to the King of England in the following year. In the year in which the Hundred Years War broke out (1337), he defended together with Philip III. of Navarre successfully Boulogne against the English. In 1340 he intervened in the War of the Breton Succession .

Charles fell on August 26, 1346 in the battle of Crécy . He was buried in the Saint-Jacques church in Paris, but was reburied in the Saint-Denis basilica in the 19th century .
