Karl Jakob Backes

Karl Jakob Backes (born October 11, 1909 in Bliesen , † January 24, 2000 in Riegelsberg ) was a German journalist .

Career

Backes attended the St. Wendel Mission House from 1921 and graduated from the local humanistic grammar school in 1930 . He followed this up with an internship at the Neunkircher Zeitung , after which he took up his first editorial position at the St. Wendeler Volksblatt . Backes studied newspaper sciences at the University of Freiburg and worked as an editor in Erfurt, Neustadt, Fulda and Oberndorf. From 1939 he took an active part in the Second World War and was taken prisoner by the French in August 1944 . In 1946 he returned to Saarland, where he became head of the local affairs and politics department at the Saarland People's Newspaper and press officer for the Christian trade unions . In 1961 Backes moved to the Saarland Broadcasting Corporation (SR) as Head of the Politics and Program Planning department , where he helped to organize the establishment of SR 1 Europawelle . Backes was the superior of the foreign correspondents and under Karl-Heinz Reintgen deputy editor-in-chief of the SR. He was also involved as Vice President of the European Union . In 1976 he was founding president of the Saarland press club and deputy chairman of the Saarland journalists' association . After his retirement, Backes worked as a freelancer for the Saarland Chamber of Crafts until 1984 .

In January 1976 Backes was awarded the Saarland Order of Merit .
