Karl Josef Rivinius SVD (born September 2, 1936 in Bous (Saar) ) is a German Catholic theologian .

Life

He attended the eight-grade elementary school in his home parish (1942–1950). From 1950 to 1953 training as a cutting machine operator . He was a skilled worker at the local Société des Usines à Tubes de la Sarre (the former Mannesmann tube works) with subsequent professional activity until 1956. After graduating from high school in February 1962, he entered the novitiate . He completed his studies in philosophy at the Philosophical-Theological University of St. Gabriel in Mödling near Vienna (1962–1965) with a Philosophikum. The study of theology at the Philosophical-Theological College SVD St. Augustin (1965–1969) he completed with the final theological examination in March 1969 and the licentiate in theology in October 1969.

He completed his studies in history and educational science in Münster since the winter semester 1969/70 in May 1972 with the first state examination in history and educational science and in theology in March 1969. From December 1969 to October 1970 he was a research assistant at the Catholic Theological Faculty of the University of Münster, where from November 1970 to October 1973 he managed the scheduled assistant position in the subject of church history. For four years he worked on the critical Bishop Wilhelm Emmanuel von Ketteler -Gesamt-Edition, which was edited and published on behalf of the Academy of Sciences and Literature . He completed his legal clerkship for the grammar school from December 1, 1974 to January 31, 1976 at the Hamm district seminar and at the Michael-Gymnasium Ahlen training school in the subjects of Catholic religious studies, history and educational science, and completed his second state examination in these subjects in December 1975. After the Rigorosa on November 18 and 19, 1974, the graduation ceremony took place on February 6, 1975.

After his habilitation on July 9, 1986 at the Catholic Theological Faculty of the University of Bonn , he was awarded the Venia legendi for Middle and Modern Church History, including mission history. From the summer semester 1976 until his retirement in the summer semester 2004 he taught middle and recent church history at the Philosophical-Theological College SVD Sankt Augustin , also 1976–1978 ancient church history including patrology . In the following years teaching assignments in the subject Middle and Modern Church History at the Studienhaus St. Lambert in Lantershofen , at the RWTH Aachen , at the University of Bochum and Münster (here also in the winter semester 1986/1987 substitute professor) as well as at the University of Cologne and at the University of Siegen . From the winter semester 1980/81 up to and including the summer semester 1983 rector at the PTH SVD Sankt Augustin, from the winter semester 1992/93 up to and including the summer semester 1998 rector at the university in question.

His main research interests are church, social and mission history. He wrote numerous articles in the Biographical-Bibliographical Church Lexicon (BBKL).
