Karl Kowanz (soccer player)

Karl Kowanz (born April 15, 1926 , † December 13, 1998 ) was an Austrian football player . The defender played with Admira in the trunk of the national team with which he took part in the 1948 Olympic Games . Later he moved to Wiener Austria , where he won the Austrian championship twice and finally ended his career successfully with an ÖFB Cup victory at the WAC .

Career

As a soccer player

Karl Kowanz was already in 1941/42 due to the war with the Admira in the combat team in the NSRL division class . After he returned to Austria from captivity in April 1946 , he developed into one of the leading defense lawyers in Austria. Together with Erich Habitzl , Karl Kowanz rose to become one of the club's best-known players and in 1948 was able to reach the final of the Vienna Cup and third championship rank.

Karl Kowanz was first used by Edi Bauer on April 18, 1948 in the Austrian national team in a 3-1 win against Switzerland . In a total of 14 international matches without any interruption, he ran on in the following two years and formed a safe defense with Ernst Happel . During this period he also took part in the 1948 Olympic Games in London, where Karl Kowanz was excluded when he was eliminated against Sweden because of repeated foul play.

Ultimately, the defender was acquired by Meister Austria in 1950 , where he was able to defend the title with the violets in 1950/51 . Initially in cooperation with Otto Melchior , Karl Stotz was later his long-term partner. Karl Kowanz played three more games in the national team, and Rudi Röckl was his successor. In his eight violet years he was also able to win the championship again in 1952/53 and twice reach the semi-finals of the Copa Rio internationally .

At the end of his playing career, Karl Kowanz moved to the WAC in the Prater, where he became part of the team that after decades made it back to the national top. In 1959, Rapid was defeated in the final of the reintroduced ÖFB Cup and third place was achieved in each of the following two championship seasons, thus qualifying for the Rappan Cup . In 1961 Karl Kowanz ended his active career.

As a soccer coach

As head coach he worked, among other things, from 1965 to 1967 at the GAK and then until the end of October 1967 at the city rivals Sturm in the top division. Then he looked after the Badener AC , the SV Admira Wiener Neustadt and the 1. Wiener Neustädter SC .
