Karl Ludolf Griesbach , also Carl Ludolph Griesbach, (born December 11, 1847 in Vienna , † April 13, 1907 in Graz ) was a British paleontologist and geologist .

Life

Despite his name and place of birth, he was British. His father was the Englishman Karl Griesbach and his mother Sarah Wigge. Griesbach worked for the Austrian geological survey in 1867/68 and led a German expedition of scientists in Portuguese East Africa ( Mozambique ) and in neighboring Natal in 1869/70 . From 1871 he worked in London and from 1878 on the Geological Survey of India .

In addition, Griesbach had joined the 6th Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers in England , where he made it to lieutenant colonel (Lt. Colonel). In 1880 he was on a special assignment in the 2nd Anglo-Afghan War (Battle of Girishk, Battle of Maiwand and the siege of Kandahar ). In 1882/83 Griesbach stayed in Hundes, Spiti and in the Garhwal Himalaya.

From 1884 to 1886 he was a geologist in the Afghan Border Commission and in 1888/89 he worked as a geologist for the Emir of Afghanistan Abdur Rahman Khan . Between 1894 and 1903 Griesbach was director of the Geological Survey of India.

In 1869 he married Emma Griesbach, an Englishwoman, daughter of pastor WR Griesbach in Millington, Yorkshire.

Edward Timothy Tozer named the Griesbachium after him.

Griesbach was temporarily a correspondent for the Imperial Geological Institute .
