Carl Luley (born September 21, 1887 in Frankfurt am Main ; † March 10, 1966 there ) was a German folk actor .

life and work

Luley was the son of a railroad worker and a flower maker. Because his mother was enthusiastic about the world of theater, she wished that her son would become an actor. He took lessons from the character actor Max Bayrhammer , who also played in Frankfurt at times , and Gustl Bayrhammer's father , and made his debut in Aschaffenburg in 1909 . In 1912 he went to the theater in Bielefeld .

After his return from the First World War , he was engaged at the municipal theaters in his hometown in 1919 . According to his contract, he mainly played "episodes and small roles" . Due to his pronounced Frankfurt dialect, he also took on the main roles in the important and popular Frankfurt dialect pieces , such as the Kaufmann Muffel in Adolf Stoltze's Alt-Frankfurt , the old citizen captain in the play of the same name by Carl Malß or the jumping jack in the country party to Königstein (also from Malß).

After 1945 Luley immediately began to play theater again in the destroyed city. With his stage partners Anny Hannewald and Else Knott , he brought old Frankfurt to life on a makeshift stage, which no longer existed outside the theater. In 1953 he was made an honorary member of the Städtische Bühnen.

Carl Luley played in numerous radio plays on the Hessian Radio . He became known to a large audience through the role of Uncle Hesselbach in the television series Familie Hesselbach . As lathe operator Dummbach in the Datterich of Ernst Elias Niebergall , his favorite role, he was seen in 1963 in a production of the municipal theaters recorded by HR (with Joseph Offenbach in the title role). In 1959 he played Santa Claus in the fairy tale film Peterchens Mondfahrt under the direction of Gerhard F. Hering .

Luley developed the plan to found a Frankfurt Volkstheater , but could no longer realize it. Thanks to his advertising, however, Liesel Christ returned to Frankfurt, which opened its Volkstheater five years after Luley's death.

In 1962, the city awarded him the plaque of honor of the city of Frankfurt am Main . His grave is in the Frankfurt main cemetery .
