Carl Balthasar Malß (born December 5, 1792 in Frankfurt am Main ; † June 3, 1848 there ) was a German poet, architect and theater director.

Life

Malß completed a commercial apprenticeship in Lyon and took part in the campaign against France in 1814/15 as a war volunteer . On his return he became an architect, but then turned to the theater. In 1820 his comedy "Die Entführung oder der alten Bürger-Capitain, a Frankfurt heroic-Borjerlich comedy in two acts" was printed for the first time and premiered on August 13, 1821 with actor Samuel Friedrich Hassel in the title role at the Frankfurt Theater. It was the first publicly performed piece in Frankfurt dialect and was a great success with the audience. Hassel played the role for over 45 years until March 26, 1866, without the slightest change.

Johann Wolfgang Goethe “highly recommended” the piece, which Malß expressed in the preface to the fourth edition published in 1833 as follows:

"To the hot mer from secure source, that old Mr. Geethé driwwer laughed."

Ludwig Börne called the citizen captain “a true masterpiece; Faithfulness to nature cannot be pursued any further. "

The “ citizen captain ” is still occasionally performed today. Of the six other plays by Malß, the “Frankfurter Lokal-Sketch in four pictures” from 1832, Mr. Hampelmann or Die Landpartie nach Königstein, has remained on stage to this day. Both pieces were already part of the repertoire of the Frankfurt Volkstheater, which opened in 1971 .

Because of the great success of the country party , he had the pieces Herr Hampelmann im Eilwagen (Hampelmanniade in six pictures) and " Herr Hampelmann sucht ein Logis " (local comedy in five pictures) follow in 1833/34 . They made the term jumping jack proverbial, so that it soon became at home in the rest of Germany.

Together with Guhr and Meck , Malß had been one of the tenants of the Frankfurt National Theater since 1842 . He committed suicide on June 3, 1848 out of desperation over the theater's financial difficulties. According to other sources, he died as a result of his asthma . He was buried in the Frankfurt main cemetery.

A street in the so-called Dichterviertel in the Frankfurt district of Dornbusch was named after Malß . He was a member of the Frankfurter Masonic Lodge Zur Einigkeit .
