Karl Maurer (Romanist)

Karl Maurer (born April 15, 1926 in Darmstadt ) is a German Romanist and comparativeist .

Life

Maurer studied Romance Studies, Classical Philology and German in Freiburg , Basel , Lille , Paris and Pisa . In 1951 he did his doctorate in Freiburg with Hugo Friedrich on the poetry of Paul Valéry ; 1955 followed the habilitation in Bonn for the Canti of Giacomo Leopardi .

In 1959 he was appointed full professor at the chair for Romance Philology at the University of Bonn. In 1965 he moved to the newly founded Ruhr University in Bochum , where from 1975 he also held the chair for general and comparative literature . After his retirement he was a visiting professor at Stanford University from 1992 to 1994 . In 2000 he was also a visiting professor at the School of Religion and Philosophy in Saint Petersburg .
