Karl May (sculptor)

Karl May (born January 31, 1884 in Frauenaurach , † January 29, 1961 in Munich ) was a Franconian sculptor , painter and draftsman .

May was the second son of a stone carving family. He attended elementary school. Since his parents could not finance a higher education, he then trained as a stone sculptor with a tombstone in his hometown. In 1907 he went to Bamberg, in 1908 to Munich, where he studied with Bernauer at the local sculpture school. He then studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts .

From 1919 he worked as a freelance artist in Gern near Munich and in Frauenaurach. Many of his sculptural works can be found in the Erlangen area, including war memorials in Baiersdorf , Bruck , Eltersdorf , Frauenaurach, Hüttendorf and Möhrendorf .

In 1972 a street in the Frauenaurach-Süd district of Erlangen was named after him.
