Karl Nieten (born December 25, 1883 in Brücken ; † January 21, 1957 in Nohfelden ) was a Birkenfeld lawyer and politician.

Career

Karl Nieten was the son of the factory manager Johann Nieten (1841-1919). He attended high school in Birkenfeld and then studied law . The Principality of Birkenfeld was one at the time as an exclave to the Grand Duchy and later to the Free State of Oldenburg . In 1906 he passed the first state examination, followed by the second state examination in 1914. After military service during the First World War and a temporary activity in Cologne , Nieten was appointed magistrate in Oberstein in January 1920 . In 1921 he was promoted to the district court councilor and in March 1923 he was transferred to the district court in Nohfelden as chief magistrate.

Already during the Ruhr occupation in 1923, under the protection of the French occupation troops in Birkenfeld, foreigners initiated an attempt to separate from the Free State of Oldenburg and the formation of a " Rhenish Republic ". An intensified state of siege was imposed and the previous government officials, including District President Walther Dörr , were expelled from the country on October 24, 1923. The Oldenburg state government then transferred the provisional management of the regional council to Nieten on October 31, 1923. After Dörr's return on January 15, 1924, his brief term of office ended and Nieten returned to his position as chief magistrate in Nohfelden, where he was permanently employed in 1927. In 1945 he was appointed by the occupation authorities as district administrator for the Birkenfeld district and held office until 1946.
