Karl Pesch

Karl Ludwig Pesch (born April 30, 1889 in Cologne , † May 16, 1941 in Prague ) was a German physician , university professor and racial and social hygienist .

Life

Pesch completed a medical degree at the universities of Freiburg, Bonn and Munich. He took part in the First World War as a volunteer on the Western Front . In 1919 he was at the University of Greifswald Dr. med. PhD . He was assistant and later senior physician at the hygiene institute of the University of Cologne , where he qualified as a professor in 1922 for hygiene and bacteriology and became associate professor in 1930.

From 1932 to 1938 he was also director of the Museum of Public Hygiene and was temporarily director of the disinfection centers in Cologne. In the context of racial hygiene , he gave a lecture on “Hereditary diseases as a ethnic danger” and Judaism . In May 1934 he proposed the establishment of an institute for genetic research and in 1937 a twin research center . From 1935 he headed the Cologne branch of the German Society for Racial Hygiene . In 1938 he moved to the Berlin Hygiene Institute. From 1940 he held the chair for hygiene with a focus on hereditary diseases at the University of Prague , which he held until his death. Curt Sonnenschein followed him to the professorship in Prague .

Pesch joined the NSDAP on May 1, 1937 and was also a member of other NS organizations, including a. of the NS-Ärztebund and the NS-Dozentbund .

The Karl Pesch Foundation was set up in 1971 to promote hygiene research at the University of Cologne .
