Karl Reinhold von Handtwig ( Russian : Карл Егорович фон Гантвиг; baptized on March 28 ^{. Jul} / April 8, 1737 ^greg. In purgatory , Estonia ; † February 9 ^jul. / February 20, 1792 ^greg. In Saint Petersburg ) was a German - Baltic knight and lieutenant general in the Imperial Russian Army .

Origin and family

Karl Reinhold vH came from the German-Baltic noble family von Handtwig , which had been resident in Estonia since around 1650. His father was the master of Kaenda and purgatory Georg Adolf von Handtwig († 1752), who was married to Eva Margaretha von Baumgarten. His brother was the Rostock professor Gustav Christian von Handtwig (1713–1776). Karl married Elisabeth Karoline von Saß (1748–1823) in Saint Petersburg in 1788, a widow von Klingstedt, her son was Karl Adam von Handtwig. In 1764 he received the Livonian and in 1765 the Estonian indigenous . From 1790 to 1792 he was the patron saint of St. Anne's Church in Saint Petersburg .

Military career

His military career began in 1755 in the guard of the Imperial Russian Army, in which he joined the Semyonovskoye bodyguard regiment as a musketeer . From 1757 in the rank of Podporutschik (sub-lieutenant) he served in various line regiments and in 1760 was appointed lieutenant . While participating in the Seven Years War he was wounded in the Battle of Zorndorf (1758), in 1759 he fought in the Battle of Kay , Battle of Kunersdorf and the siege of Kolberg . He was released for convalescence and served again in a guard regiment from 1763 and in the Preobrazhensk body guard regiment in 1765 . As a volunteer he took part in the naval expedition to the Mediterranean as a lieutenant captain in 1770 and was deployed in the sea battle of Çeşme . In 1771 he was promoted to captain and in 1773 to brigadier . He served in the Chevalier Corps and was promoted to major general in 1774. From 1777 to 1782 he served in the Estonia division and in 1780 was promoted to lieutenant general. After a brief war assignment in 1789, he was transferred back to Saint Petersburg. On November 24, 1782, he was decorated with the Russian Order of St. Anne . From 1782 he was also a member of the War College and served in the Finnish Division until 1784, in the 7th Division in 1784, in the 1st Division in 1785, in the Belarusian Division in 1788, in the Imperial Army in 1789 and again in the from 1790 to 1792 Finnish division. He died on April 29, 1792 as an active general on duty.
