Origin and family

Karl Reinhold vH came from the German-Baltic noble family von Handtwig , which had been resident in Estonia since around 1650. His father was the master of Kaenda and purgatory Georg Adolf von Handtwig († 1752), who was married to Eva Margaretha von Baumgarten. His brother was the Rostock professor Gustav Christian von Handtwig (1713–1776). Military career

In 1771 he was promoted to captain and in 1773 to brigadier . He served in the Chevalier Corps and was promoted to major general in 1774. From 1777 to 1782 he served in the Estonia division and in 1780 was promoted to lieutenant general. After a brief war assignment in 1789, he was transferred back to Saint Petersburg. On November 24, 1782, he was decorated with the Russian Order of St. Anne . From 1782 he was also a member of the War College and served in the Finnish Division until 1784, in the 7th Division in 1784, in the 1st Division in 1785, in the Belarusian Division in 1788, in the Imperial Army in 1789 and again in the from 1790 to 1792 Finnish division.
