Karl Richard Robert von Koch (born August 2, 1852 in Stettin , † April 15, 1924 in Bad Liebenzell ) was a German physicist and meteorologist .

Life

Karl Richard von Koch studied at the universities of Bonn , Freiburg and Göttingen and was educated in Freiburg i. Br. 1875 to Dr. phil. PhD . He then worked as a librarian at the University of Freiburg i. B. and began his research in physics with Emil Warburg . In 1881 he became a lecturer in physics.

During his time as a private lecturer, Karl Richard von Koch was selected by Georg von Neumayer to participate in the First International Polar Year 1882-1883 as the responsible meteorologist. He carried out meteorological observations in Labrador (Nain, Okak, Hoffenthal, Zoar, Hebron and Rama), in addition to making records on the life of the Eskimo resident there and adding elaborate eskimo carvings made of walrus ivory to the America collection of University of Göttingen brought in.

In 1886 he was born in Freiburg i. Br. Appointed associate professor and in 1888 switched to a professorship in Aachen .

Karl Richard von Koch became professor for physics and meteorology at the Royal Technical University of Stuttgart in 1891 . Here he designed the new Physics Institute, which was opened in 1910 and he was the director.

In 1919 he had to give up the professorship for physics at the Technical University of Stuttgart due to heart problems.

His scientific work mainly focused on improving measurement methods, especially elasticity. He was particularly interested in the application of physical principles to practical problems and natural events. His best-known research probably concerns the elasticity of metals at high temperatures, the determination of gravity and the aurora.

The geodesist Alfred Berroth received his doctorate in 1915 with him and Ernst von Hammer .

Karl Richard von Koch was a member of the Association for Patriotic Natural History in Württemberg from 1892 , was a member of the German Physical Society from 1899 to 1923 and was admitted to the Leopoldina on February 10, 1915 ( matriculation no. 3369 ) .
