Karl Schallhas
Karl Philipp Schallhas (* 1767 in Pressburg ; † September 21, 1797 in Vienna ) was an Austrian painter and etcher .
Life
He was born in Pressburg, but spent most of his life in Vienna. He studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts and was also active as a painter in this city. He was admitted to the Academy as a student between 1783 and 1786 and found a great supporter in his professor Johann Christian Brand , a teacher in landscape painting who had once been active in Hungary . In January 1787, Karl Schallhas and Anton Troger shared the art school prize, his own painting based on a theme from Gessner's idylls. In 1790 he became a member of the academy, in 1795 he was a teacher in the class for landscape drawing and in 1796, a year before his death, he was appointed assistant professor. He died at the age of thirty in 1797.
In 1934 Karl-Schallhas-Gasse in Vienna- Hietzing was named after him.
Works
His oil paintings are nostalgic representations of nature, often pastoral scenes with shepherds and cattle, the painterly expression of the harmonious relationship between man and nature, and impress with their excellent perspective. Some of his works are exhibited in the Belvedere in Vienna and in the Hungarian National Library in Budapest .
In addition, he also worked as an etcher and mainly depicted landscapes, namely sequences from different regions of Austria, always drawn or etched from nature and z. Partly painted, but also created cityscapes and small portraits (e.g. of himself).
He is considered to be a representative of a transitional art between late baroque and Biedermeier .
