Karl Schiller (astronomer)

Karl Friedrich Ernst Gustav Schiller (born March 27, 1882 in Cologne , † April 26, 1979 in Buchschlag ) was a German astronomer .

Life

Born in Cologne, Karl Schiller, son of Postmaster Paul Schiller and Katharina Schiller, born Hauser, devoted himself to the High School to the study of astronomy, which he with the promotion of Dr. phil. nat. completed. Karl Schiller was subsequently employed at various observatories , including from 1907 to 1913 in the director function of the Bothkamp observatory . Schiller subsequently held positions as an assistant, and later as an observator at the Leipzig observatory . In 1946 he switched to a position as a lecturer at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main , and in 1956 he was appointed honorary professor for astronomy. In addition, from 1947 to 1960 he was head of the Astronomical Institute. Schiller was elected a member of the Astronomical Society in 1906 . The main research focus of the author of numerous technical articles was in particular the location of stars.

The passionate photographer Karl Schiller married Else, née Thormeyer, in 1921. He died in Buchschlag in April 1979 at the old age of 97.
