Karl Sell (legal scholar)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Karl Sell , also Carl Sell (* July 20, 1810 in Darmstadt ; † July 23, 1879 in Bonn ) was a German legal scholar and professor at the University of Bonn .

Life

After attending school in Darmstadt and Wetzlar, he studied law at the Universities of Giessen and Heidelberg . During his studies in 1828 he became a member of the old Gießen fraternity Germania and in 1831 a member of the old Heidelberg fraternity Franconia . In 1844 he became an honorary member of the Bonn Wingolf . After completing his doctorate, he tried in vain for his habilitation in Bonn in 1834; However, he was habilitated in Gießen with the writing De condictionibus quaesitiones duae (Darmstadt 1834) for Roman law and there was appointed associate professor. In Bonn, after the resignation of Professor Moritz August von Bethmann-Hollweg on November 15, 1839 , Sell was appointed full professor of law. Friedrich von Bezold reported in his history to the University of Bonn that Sell had been called against the proposals of the faculty at the instigation of the curator Rehfues. Bezold judges him devastatingly; he calls it “a scientific zero” and speaks of a “fateful appointment”.

In addition to Roman law, the focus of his teaching was on Roman legal history and civil procedural law . In the academic year 1853/54 he was rector of the University of Bonn.

His brother Georg Wilhelm August Sell was also a professor of law.

Family / Villa Sell

Sell had a marriage with Wilhelmine Schleiermacher (1813–1876), who also came from Darmstadt, from around 1840. Her father, Ludwig Johann Schleiermacher, was the Grand Ducal Hessian Senior Building Director and Director of the Grand Ducal Museum in Darmstadt . The marriage had three children, one of whom died in infancy. After his appointment at the end of 1839, Sell settled in Bonn, the landscape of which he had considered "paradise" and "unattainable happiness" since his studies. Around 1843/44 he had a classicist- picturesque villa built on the banks of the Rhine . There he met one of his former students, Ernst Zitelmann , who, after Sell's death (1879) and being appointed professor in Bonn in 1883, moved into the villa in the fall of 1884 and acquired it by 1891. After the Federal Republic of Germany had acquired it in 1950, it was demolished in 1953/54 for the new building of the Post Office .
