Karl Singer (born September 5, 1940 in Cozmeni , Harghita County , Kingdom of Romania ; † May 9, 2015 in Timișoara , Romania ) was a mathematician , professor at the Western University of Timișoara , founding member and chairman of the Democratic Forum of Germans in the Banat , deputy Chairman of the Democratic Forum of Germans in Romania and holder of the Federal Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Live and act

Karl Singer was born in Cozmeni, Harghita County, the oldest of four children. His family returned to the Banat at the age of seven . In Bacova , Timiș County , his father's hometown, he attended elementary school from 1947 to 1954. He then graduated from the German Pedagogical Institute in Timișoara by 1958. After that he worked as a German teacher at the middle school in Oravița until 1963 . From 1963 to 1968 he studied business cybernetics at the Bucharest Business Academy . Between 1968 and 1970 Singer was active as a researcher at the Center for Economic Cybernetics Bucharest. From 1970 to 1975 he studied mathematics and theoretical physics at the West University of Timișoara . In 1989 he received his doctorate in the field of applied mathematics on the subject of "Simulation models for economic development". Between 1970 and 1998 he taught at the Faculty of Economics at the University of Timișoara, where he also held the office of Vice Dean for two years . In October 1998 he retired.

Volunteering

After the political change in 1989 , Karl Singer was a founding member of the Democratic Forum of Germans in the Banat and was its chairman for 25 years. At the same time he was deputy chairman of the Democratic Forum of Germans in Romania . In this honorary function he campaigned for the interests of the German minority in Romania ; the preservation of the cultural tradition, the continued existence of the German-speaking schools, the promotion of young people, the support of the cultural institutions to maintain the German mother tongue and the promotion of the identity of the Germans in the Banat. He was also committed to social welfare and the establishment and prosperity of social institutions in the Banat. Karl Singer did business promotion work on the supervisory board of the Banatia Association and was a member of the Stefan Jäger Foundation . He was a valued discussion partner for politics and administration in the Banat, Romania and the Federal Republic of Germany.

  • Cross of Merit on Ribbon of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (December 11, 2010) for his commitment to the interests of the German minority in the Banat and Romania as well as for the bridging function between the German minority in Romania and Germany
  • Medal of Honor 25 Years of the Democratic Forum of Germans in Romania (March 9, 2015)
  • Badge in gold of the Banatia Association Timișoara
  • Alexander Tietz Prize of the German Forum of the Banat Berglanddeutsche Reschitza
