Karl Vettermann
Karl Vettermann (* 1937 in Vienna , † 24 / 25. January 1990 in the Caribbean ) was an Austrian offshore yachtsman and author .
Life
Vettermann grew up in Klosterneuburg . He ran away from home at the age of fourteen to go to sea, but was intercepted in Passau while trying to cross the border. He became an industrial clerk and worked in this profession for several years in Barbados . He later returned to Austria and, as an enthusiastic sailor, took over the yacht building of the then hardly established Shark 24 in the Korneuburg shipyard in 1972 .
In 1975 he took part in the transatlantic regatta as a crew member on the Rasmus II of the Bregenz Yacht Club , and a year later he was navigator on the Rubin.
Later, Vettermann was best known as the author of the popular Barawitzka stories, in which the joys and sorrows of a colorful mix of Austrian sailing crews are portrayed. But nautical specialist books also originate from his pen.
Vettermann went overboard at night near the Antilles island of St. Lucia and was no longer found. Speculations that it was not an accident were neither corroborated nor refuted.
