Life and education

Windhäuser was born as the son of a primary school teacher and his wife Wilhelmine Schönewald (* Argenthal September 27, 1887). His father died in 1918, probably as a soldier in the First World War . Karl attended what was later known as the Herzog-Johann-Gymnasium until he graduated from high school in 1929, which he completed with ten other students, including a woman, as the fourth year of high school graduation. He studied German, theater and Romance studies (French) at the University of Cologne .

Act

Little is known about his early activities. In the early 1940s he worked for the Reich broadcaster in Cologne . After the Second World War he became a teacher of German and French at his former school. There he set up a theater working group, in which the filmmaker Edgar Reitz discovered his love for acting. He held this position - most recently as a senior teacher - until his retirement in 1973.

Activities alongside and after the job

From 1960, Windhäuser was a CDU member in the city council of Simmern, from 1973 (honorary) first alderman and from 1976 to 1978 (honorary) mayor of Simmern. His former student Edgar Reitz cast him in his feature film Die Reise nach Wien . In addition, he was often active as a writer, often in collaboration with Hajo Knebel .

Honors

In 1980 Windhäuser received the Federal Cross of Merit.
