Charles of Spain (Spanish: Don Carlos de Austria) (born September 14, 1607 in Madrid ; † July 30, 1632 in Madrid) was an infant and from 1621 to 1629 heir to the throne of Spain and Portugal from the House of Austria .

Life

Karl was the second son of the Spanish King Philip III. (1578–1621) from his marriage to Margarete (1584–1611), daughter of Archduke Karl of Austria . The Infante was brought up together with his siblings Anna , later Queen of France, Philip , later King of Spain, Maria Anna , later Roman-German Empress, and Ferdinand , later governor of the Netherlands. Particular attention was paid to the prince's artistic and painterly training. In 1612, the painter Bartolomé González y Serrano created a painting of the 5-year-old prince for Emperor Matthias , shown together with his sister Maria Anna, who was one year older.

From 1621 to 1629 Karl was the presumptive Spanish heir to the throne and was very close to the Spanish throne during a serious illness of his brother Philip IV. Because of his noticeably dark Castilian complexion, which is atypical for the Habsburgs, Karl was considered extremely popular among the Spanish population. Politically gifted, he aroused the displeasure of the Minister, Count Olivares, and was involved in several conspiracies against the first minister.

After the birth of his nephew and heir to the throne Baltasar Carlos , Karl lost its political importance. He died of typhus in Madrid at the age of 24 and was buried in Chapel 9 of the Pantheon of the Infants in the Real Sitio de San Lorenzo de El Escorial . Large parts of the Spanish population were convinced that Charles had been poisoned by Olivares.
