Karoline Engelhard

Karoline Engelhard (born October 25, 1781 in Kassel , † September 14, 1855 in Kassel) was a German writer.

origin

Engelhard was the eldest daughter of Johann Philipp Engelhard and his wife Philippine Engelhard , geb. Gatterer. She had nine siblings, including her brother Wilhelm Gotthelf Engelhard and sister Luise, who married the Magdeburg businessman Johann Gottlob Nathusius .

Life

Engelhard grew up in his father's house in middle-class, but modest circumstances due to the large number of children of the parents in Kassel. From the end of April 1805 to September 1806 she was a nanny for Sophie Mereau , Clemens Brentano's wife at the time in Heidelberg . Mereau was a powerful influence on them.

She was an educational writer. She became known as the author of Julien's letters, although she initially published them under the pseudonym Julie. Her identity was revealed in Philippi's Merkur (Literature Journal No. 5) in 1824 . Friedrich Wilhelm Strieder , who met Engelhard in Marburg together with Sophie Mereau, confirmed the pseudonym in its basis for a Hessian history of scholars, writers and artists .

Engelhard tries to connect poetry with the reality that surrounds it, which was not easy because: "... poetry ... freedom (wants), strict morality puts brazen fetters; I couldn't leave either of them, and that the only means of unification was also only a seed of pain, since there was not what both principles wanted ... how few inhabitants of the poetic world are truly happy; most of them go a thorn path that lacks the harmony of both worlds ... " how she wrote to Strieder. According to the contemporary literary historian Heinrich Kurz ... developed (she) just as much spirit as soul ... in her novels .

Some of her works have been published in various newspapers and compilations, such as the Morgenblatt (1808), Taschenbuch für Damen (Tübingen 1809), Gubitz ' Der Gesellschafter (1817), Zeitung for the Elegant World (1822 and 1823) and the Dresdner Morgen-Zeitung . Engelhard also wrote lyrics for songs like "Amen" and "When I get into bed".

The artist lived in Kassel and temporarily in Blankenburg in the Harz region. She stayed with her sister Luise in Althaldensleben for longer periods of time and was often visiting Berlin , Dresden (with another sister and with Elisa von der Recke ) and Marburg.

Engelhard was friends with the Brothers Grimm , who lived for a while opposite the Engelhard's father's house in Kassel, and Franz Christoph Horn . After an unhappy love she remained unmarried, founded the "Engelhard Foundation for Unmarried Daughters" and had no offspring.
