Karolis Žalkauskas

Karolis Žalkauskas (born May 29, 1892 in the Šukioniai court , Wolost Pakruojis , Šiauliai district , Russian Empire ; † September 16, 1961 in Washington ) was a Lithuanian lawyer , judge and politician .

Life

In 1911 Žalkauskas graduated from high school in Jelgava ( Latvia ) and in 1916 studied law at the Law Faculty of Moscow University in Russia . In 1916 he was mobilized by the Imperial Russian Army . Then Žalkauskas graduated from the Alexej Military School in Moscow and served at the Petropavlovsk fortress in western Siberia and later in Tobolsk . In 1919 he returned to Lithuania and served as a volunteer in the Lithuanian Army . Until 1923 he worked as an assistant to the public prosecutor in the military court .

From 1922 Žalkauskas was a member of the party Lietuvos valstiečių liaudininkų sąjunga . From 1922 to 1923 he worked in the government of Lithuania under the direction of Ernestas Galvanauskas and was Minister of the Interior of Lithuania . From 1924 to 1926 he served as assistant to the public prosecutor in the Vyriausiasis Tribunolas . From 1926 to 1927 he was governor of the Memelland in Klaipėda . From 1928 to 1938 he was again assistant to the public prosecutor at Vyriausiasis tribunolas. Then he headed the Kaunas District Court as court president . From 1930 to 1940 he taught criminal procedure law and criminology at the Vytauto Didžiojo universitetas in Kaunas . In 1940 he emigrated to Germany and in 1948 to the USA .
