Margrave Ottokar III. founded the monastery in 1165 and entrusted it to the Carthusian Order . He compensated his liege, Ortolf von Gonobitz, with other goods for the remote lands . Both Ottokar III. himself as well as his wife and son Ottokar IV were buried in the monastery.

After an eventful history, the monastery was one of the first to be dissolved by Emperor Josef II. In 1782 and the extensive holdings at that time, including the Seizerhof and the Gonobitz rule, were incorporated into the religious fund. The Charterhouse itself was left to decay. It was only sold to Weriand Fürst zu Windisch-Grätz in 1826 with the reign of Gonobitz .

Cultural meaning

At the beginning of the 14th century, the Carthusian monk Philipp von Seiz wrote a rhymed life of the Virgin Mary with more than 10,000 verses in Seiz . From 1342 to 1345 Konrad von Hainburg was Prior of Seitz.

Library

Seizer book art

Seitz once owned one of the richest libraries in Europe . On May 30, 1487, the Bishop of Caorle visited the monastery as envoy of the Patriarch of Aquileia . His secretary Paolo Santonino wrote in his travelogue that the monks owned more than 2,000 volumes (manuscripts). Today only 120 of them are known, another 100 have been preserved as fragments.

When the monastery was almost deserted in the middle of the 16th century, Archduke Charles II ordered the books to be transported to the library of the Jesuit University in Graz .
