Helga Labs (née Milke , born May 22, 1940 in Wenigtreben ) was from 1974 to 1985 the chairwoman of the pioneering organization "Ernst Thälmann" in the GDR .

Life

Helga Labs was born in a Lower Silesian village as the daughter of a farming family. From 1955 to 1959 she was trained as a lower school teacher at the Institute for Teacher Training in Rochlitz . She joined the FDJ in 1955 , was a member of the FDJ district leadership Rochlitz from 1956 and 1959-1960 there FDJ secretary. In 1959 she became a member of the SED . From 1960 to 1966 she was first an instructor in the youth department and then secretary for school youth. From 1967 to 1969 she was chairman of the pioneering organization " Ernst Thälmann " in the Karl-Marx-Stadt district and secretary of the FDJ district leadership. From 1969 to December 1973, Labs was first secretary of the FDJ district leadership in Karl-Marx-Stadt and a member of the secretariat of the SED district leadership .

In 1974, as the successor to Egon Krenz , she became chairwoman of the pioneering organization "Ernst Thälmann" in the GDR and at the same time secretary of the Central Council of the FDJ. From 1976 to 1989 she was a member of the Central Committee of the SED and from 1976 to 1986 a member of the youth commission at the Politburo of the Central Committee of the SED. As a member of the People's Chamber from 1976 to 1986 she was a member of the Committee on National Defense and from 1986 to 1989 a member of the Committee on Popular Education. After leaving the FDJ apparatus, on January 24, 1985, she succeeded Paul Ruhig as chairwoman of the central committee of the teaching and education union in the FDGB . She was vice-chair of the International Federation of Teachers' Unions (FISE). On February 3, 1990, she announced her resignation as Chair of the Education Union. She became a hoarder , later she worked in a job creation scheme (ABM) before she became a pensioner.

Labs was awarded the Gold Patriotic Order of Merit in 1985.

In the local elections in 2003, she ran for the PDS in Leegebruch, where she lived .
