Werner Engst

Werner Engst (born June 1, 1930 in Groß Särchen ; † November 24, 2005 in Berlin ) was a German SED politician.

Promotion to Deputy Minister in the GDR

After training as a machine fitter, he graduated from the Dresden State Pioneer School in 1950 . He then became a functionary of the Free German Youth (FDJ) and pioneer leader of the pioneer organization Ernst Thälmann . From 1953 to 1956, Engst studied at the Institute for Teacher Training in Berlin-Köpenick . He then worked as a lower school teacher and a functionary in the central council of the FDJ.

In 1964 he succeeded Robert Lehmann as chairman of the pioneering organization "Ernst Thälmann". On February 8, 1971, he was succeeded by Egon Krenz in this office.

From 1971 to 1989 he was Vice Minister for Popular Education in the GDR and thus deputy to the former chairman of the pioneering organization “Ernst Thälmann” Margot Honecker . Engst was also temporarily Deputy Chairman of the UNESCO Commission of the GDR. From December 1970 to 1989 he was also responsible for youth welfare / home education, i.e. also for the youth work centers (JWH) and special children's homes (SKH) as well as the care of foreign children in youth welfare homes.

Political activities after reunification

After reunification in 1992 he became a member of the Working Committee of the "Solidarity Committee for the victims of political persecution in Germany" as well as Chairman of the Solidarity Committee in association Society for Legal and Humanitarian Support Association and the Association Society for the Protection of Civil Rights and Human Dignity eV
