Richard Schallock (born June 3, 1896 in Strasburg , † September 10, 1956 in Berlin ) was a German teacher , trade unionist and politician ( SPD , SED ).

Life

Richard Schallock was born on June 3, 1896 in Strasburg in West Prussia, the son of a bailiff. After attending the elementary schools in Köslin , Naugard and Regenwalde , he went to the preparatory institute in Köslin from 1910 to 1913 and then began the teachers' seminar there . He took part in World War I as a soldier from October 1915 , was promoted to sergeant and suffered a serious injury in 1917, as a result of which one of his legs had to be amputated. He then returned to his homeland as a severely disabled person , where he continued the teachers' seminar. In 1918 he passed the first and in 1920 the second teacher examination. From 1919 to 1933 he worked as a primary school teacher in Köslin.

In addition to his professional activity, Schallock was involved in trade union work. From 1919 to 1921 he was a member of the state board of the Prussian Teachers 'Association and the Prussian Young Teachers' Association, where he headed the department for advanced training and since 1928 was a member of the main board of the Union of German People's Teachers in the General German Civil Service Association (ADB). From 1926 to 1929 he was chairman of the ADB local committee in Köslin, from 1930 to 1933 chairman of the main board of the General German Teachers' Union and since September 1930 also a member of the ADB federal board. In addition, he acted from 1928 to 1933 as chairman of the Pomeranian Gau Committee of the Reich Association of War Disabled, War participants and survivors of the war .

Schallock joined the SPD in 1919 and was chairman of the Social Democrats for the East Pomeranian district until 1933. From 1924 to 1933 he was a city ​​councilor in Köslin and there from 1932 deputy city councilor. In 1928 he was elected to the Prussian state parliament, to which he belonged until 1933. After the National Socialists came to power, he had to give up his political and trade union activities, was taken into “ protective custody ” from June to August 1933 and was banned from working. In the following years he worked as an insurance agent. In November 1943 and August 1944 he was again imprisoned in Köslin.

After the end of the Second World War , Schallock continued his political and trade union activities, became a member of the SPD again in 1945 and was mayor of the city of Köslin from May to June 1945 . When Köslin came to Poland, he moved to the Soviet zone of occupation (SBZ) and in July 1945 participated in the establishment of the Association of Teachers and Educators in the FDGB for Greater Berlin , of which he was a member until 1948 (temporarily as a member of the board). From June 1946 to December 1949 he was chairman of the central board of the teachers and educators union in the FDGB, initially on a voluntary basis and since May 1948 full-time. From April 1947 to 1950 he was also a member of the FDGB federal executive committee.

Schallock became a member of the SED in April 1946 in the course of the forced unification of the SPD and KPD to form the SED. From January 1947 to April 1948 he was the deputy head of department in the German Administration for Popular Education in the Soviet Zone and from March 24, 1949 until his resignation for health reasons on November 28, 1951, he was Minister for Popular Education in the minister-presidents Erhard Hübener and Werner Bruschke led governments of the state of Saxony-Anhalt . In 1949 he became a member of the SED state executive committee and second state chairman of the Society for German-Soviet Friendship in Saxony-Anhalt.

Richard Schallock died on September 10, 1956 in East Berlin . His urn was in the grave conditioning Pergolenweg the memorial of the socialists at the Berlin Central Cemetery Friedrichsfelde buried.
