The Gürzenich-Wald barracks is located in the Gürzenich district of Düren in North Rhine-Westphalia .

The barracks were built in 1953 for the British Army of the Rhine . It covers a total area of 150 hectares in the middle of the forest.

On February 1, 1964, the Air Force NCO School (UffzSLw) was established there in accordance with Luftwaffe deployment order No. 246 of May 25th . The official commissioning took place on October 1, 1964 by the Inspector of the Air Force , Lieutenant General Werner Panitzki . Defense Minister Kai-Uwe von Hassel gave the school a sleeve . No other school got a cuff.

There were two other schools of this type in Sonthofen and Aachen (Heer).

1965 took Bundeswehr this property by the British and used them from now on as Air Force - ammunition depot and in the management area for NCO School of the Air Force. After the non-commissioned school was relocated, in addition to the ammunition depot for the Nörvenich air base , the Defense District Command (VKK) was housed in the barracks until it was dissolved .

In 1970, a change of subordination from the Air Force Office to the newly formed Air Force Training Command came into effect. With the order for the relocation of April 30, 1971, the Air Force NCOs moved from Gürzenich-Wald to Iserlohn to the Air Force Training School (TrSLw) on July 1st .

65 ammunition warehouses on the site have a storage capacity of around 6,000 square meters. In addition, there are well-renovated training rooms. One ammunition warehouse can be used as a heatable workhouse, three more as staging houses for transports in the entrance area. The storage capacities and the interesting infrastructure with an intact track network offer possibilities for use.

The “Im Eichenbruch” housing estate consists of 40 houses that are still inhabited today by members of the military from neighboring Aachen, Eschweiler, Nörvenich, Kerpen, Mechernich and Jülich. On the previously unused military area, the tennis community Gürzenich-Wald e. V. is at home.

As part of the “ transformation ” of the Bundeswehr, the air force ammunition depot was downgraded to an ammunition store and at the end of 2009 it was completely closed.

In September 2015, the apartment blocks in the ammunition depot were prepared as an initial reception facility for around 500 refugees. The occupancy will take place from September 21, 2015.
